Prescott Groom Creek Trail TR307

Mountain Biking PrescottTrail 307/Groom Creek Loop

Prescott – Mountain Biking TR307. From downtown Prescott, if you are around the courthouse, travel east (back to the valley) on Gurley Street 0.3 miles to Mount Vernon Avenue. Turn South (right) on Mt. Vernon – small blue signage – keep your eyes open. It looks like a side neighborhood road. Travel 6.4 miles, it turns into Senator Highway.  The trailhead is about one mile past the “Community” of Groom Creek on the left.  It is well signed with a bathroom at the trailhead. Water is available at the horse camp across the road.

From the North loop at the trailhead, the trail passes through Oak and Juniper. You will then enter into one of the best Ponderosa Pine stands in the Prescott Forest. The trail climbs 1200 feet or 3 miles up a wide, sometimes steep, mostly rocky and often eroded path. You will go through the upper Wolf Creek drainage to the top of Spruce Mountain and the Lookout Tower, where there is a picnic table.
When manned you may visit the Lookout Tower. The tower offers panoramic views of Prescott and Granite Mountain to the west, Mingus Mountain and the San Francisco Peaks to the northeast.
The trail down is about 5 miles, it first follows South Spruce Ridge for about 1.6 miles. Then it begins a long, twisting descent down the mountain. Great single-track, mostly narrow, sometimes smooth and fast, sometimes rocky and technical, a lot of fun. You will also be crossing several old mining roads along the way down. This is the sort of trail that “makes” you ride well.  Please Note:  Many people ride horses on this trail and many groups from the various nearby camps hike this trail. This is also a fee area, I believe. So leave your 2 bucks to keep the trail in shape.

If you want to spend some more time playing on single track without driving anywhere, head across the road to the horse camp, find site 26 and head off into a maze of single tracks and dirt roads extending for miles!
